Posh believe transfer deadline day signing Conor Coventry is the final piece of their Championship puzzle.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder arrived on a season-long loan from Premier League side West Ham United to end a lengthy pursuit by Posh.

It’s a position they were desperate to fill to free summer signing Jorge Grant into a more advanced midfield role.

Posh manager Darren Ferguson said: “We’ve been trying to get this deal done for a while. We thought we’d lost him at one point, but he was always the one we wanted.

“I’m delighted to get it done and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Ireland Under 21 captain Coventry is currently away on international duty so won’t meet his new teammates until the middle of next week.

But he could still make his Posh debut in a Championship game at Sheffield United on September 11. Posh have no game until then.

Coventry said: “People from inside and outside have told me what a great club Peterborough is and I can’t wait to get started in the Championship and help to them to as high a position as possible.

“I knew they were interested in me for most of the summer so it was encouraging they had the faith in me to be patient while the deal got done. I loved talking to the manager. He wants to play football the way I like to play football.”

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony expects Coventry to complement the other midfielders at the club perfectly, while director of football Barry Fry is also expecting big things from the new signing.

“Conor is top-class,” Fry stated. “The manager made him a priority signing and we now have strong competition for every position.”

West Ham have a ‘break’ clause in Coventry’s deal which means they can call him back in January if he’s not played enough matches.
