Healthy odds on a first Posh title for almost 50 years!

-

Posh are joint seventh favourites with Sky Bet to win League One in 2022-23.

Posh are currently a healthy 16-1 to finish top in the first odds list published since the 24 competing teams were finalised, which is the longest price they’ve been before the start of a third tier campaign for many years.

Ipswich Town are the favourites at 11-2 just ahead of League One play-off semi-final losers Sheffield Wednesday at 6-1 and Derby County, relegated alongside Posh from the Championship last season, are 9-1.

Expect Derby’s odds to shorten if the proposed takeover by prospective owner Chris Kirchner goes through, although it was delayed again earlier this week.

The third relegated side, Barnsley (14-1), are also shorter odds than Posh to bounce back up as champions.

Cambridge United and Morecambe are the rank outsiders at 100-1.

Full list: 11-2 Ipswich, 6-1 Sheffield Wednesday, 9-1 Derby, 12-1 Barnsley, 14-1 Portsmouth, Bolton, 16-1 MK Dons, Oxford United, POSH, Wycombe, 18-1 Charlton, 201 Plymouth, 28-1 Shrewsbury, 33-1 Bristol Rovers, Forest Green Rovers, Lincoln, 40-1 Burton, Port Vale, 50-1 Accrington,

Exeter, Fleetwood, 66-1 Cheltenham, 100-1 Morecambe, Cambridge.

Posh haven’t won a league title since the Fourth Division Championship-winning campaign of 1973-74, but they did win promotion from League One just two seasons ago.

They are 5-1 to repeat that feat and 15/8 to finish in the top six.

Newly-promoted Forest

Green Rovers sprang a surprise this week by appointing Ian Burchnall as their new head coach following the departure of Rob Edwards to Watford.

Burchnall has left National League Notts County to take charge of the League One club.

County twice suffered play-off failure under Burchnall.

Barnsley are believed to be interviewing several candidates for their vacant manager’s post including current Cheltenham boss Michael Duff.

A number of names have been linked with the post, including current Burton AlbionmanagerJimmyFloydHasselbaink, Chesterfield boss Paul Cook, the Tykes former manager Daniel Stendel and ex-Middlesbrough chief Jonathan Woodgate.
