Inverness welterweight Chisholm targets title fight next year

- BY STEPHEN KASIEWICZ

Inverness welterweight Alastair Chisholm reckons he will be ready for a Scottish title fight next year.

The 29-year-old thrilled his hometown crowd with a spectacular secondround knockout victory in just his third fight as a professional against Melrose’s Gary Collins at the New Drumossie Hotel.

Chisholm, who works as a fireman at Inverness Airport, is keen to gain as much experience as possible before the end of the year with two more fights scheduled in the Highland capital in October and December.

Chisholm, who is known by the nickname Jasper, said: “I want to keep going and get a fight every couple of months until the end of the year.

“I want to get as much experience this year and then look at the Scottish or Commonwealth title next year.

“I need to get more rounds in and fight more experienced boxers each time.”

P r o m o t e r To mmy Gilmour was impressed with Chisholm’s speed and aggression as he made short work of Collins.

Chisholm added: “It is always good to get a knockout. I felt strong. It was a clean punch and it could not have landed it any better. Tommy did not expect the knockout but he could see my strength.

“My training really paid off.

“It is good people are noticing I am putting the work in.

“Hopefully I can get back on a St Andrew’s Sporting Club show in Glasgow in the next couple of months.

“I won boxer of the month after my first fight against Lee Jevons in June last yearandi hopetommy will get me back down there.

“Possibly I will try to go further afield to fight in bigger venues.

“I have three wins now and it is time to start building up from now on.”
