Double tilt as Stewart signs off in some style

Aberdeen runner leaves under-20s with golden handshake

Aberdeen AAC’s Great Britain junior internatio­nal Kelsey Stewart won the 400m for the third year in a row in the Scottish under-20 championsh­ips at Grangemout­h and earned herself a bonus by striking 800m silver.

The 19-year-old Stonehaven athlete, who was making her final appearance in the age-group competitio­n before stepping up to the senior ranks, blasted her way to victory in the one-lap race in 54.49.

She was just 0.08sec outside her personal best time and finished well clear of Jill Cherry (VP Glasgow), second in 56.12, and Roisin Smith (Airdrie), who took bronze in 57.20.

Stewart went on to finish runnerup in the 800m, clocking 2:12.74 behind Jemma Reekie (Kilbarchan AAC), who won in 2:11.56.

Elgin AAC’s Siobhan Kingham also hit peak form by winning the triple jump with a final round personal best clearance of 11.59m to pip Kilbarchan’s Shona Ross, who had led with 11.48.

The Fochabers athlete came home with a brace of bronze medals, setting another lifetime best of 25.48 in the 200m and clearing 5.41 in the long jump.

Moray’s Dionne Milne maintained her outstandin­g record in the championsh­ips by winning the discus for the fourth year in a row. The Robert Gordon University student threw 41.71m, while Aberdeen AAC’s Erin Runcie took the silver with 34.32.

There was also a gold for Banchory Stonehaven AC’s Eve Sealy in the 1,500m steeplecha­se, the Deeside athlete taking the title in a personal best time of 6:11.21.

Elgin’s Findlay Donegan was pipped for gold in the triple jump. Despite clearing a personal best 13.45, he lost out to VP Glasgow’s David Wilson, who won with 13.48.

Shetland’s Connor McDonald also had to settle for silver after throwing 12.53m in the shot, while Gillian Gordon (Inverness Harriers) was second in the 400m hurdles in a lifetime best of 66.25.

There were bronzes for Scott Macgregor (Aberdeen AAC), who clocked his quickest time of 16.96 in the 110m hurdles, Ruaridh Gray (Inverness Harriers) who threw 32.86 in the discus and another Inverness athlete, Daniel McFarlane, who cleared 3.71 in the pole vault.
