Hunt on for thugs after Dons-Gers shame game

Crime: Probe into vandalism of team bus and stadium seats

- BY DEREK HEALEY

Police last night vowed to track down those who “let themselves and their club down” during Sunday’s Aberdeen v Rangers game.

Two people have been charged in connection with alleged incidents at the match, while an investigation has been launched after the Rangers bus was vandalised.

The bus, which was parked at Ardoe House Hotel near Aberdeen, was scratched with graffiti referencing the 1971 Ibrox disaster, when 66 fans were crushed to death.

And yesterday, dramatic images of fans throwing plastic seats at Pittodrie also emerged online.

Aberdeen FC have confirmed officials will go through CCTV with police to find out the extent of the damage.

He said: “An inspection of the stadium was to start today. We will be following this up.”

A police spokeswoman said they were aware of the footage, and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Chief Superintendent Campbell Thomson confirmed two people had been reported to the procurator fiscal for their alleged behaviour at the game.

A 25-year-old, from Aberdeen, was charged with being in possession of a flare, while a 22-year-old, from Glasgow, is alleged to have behaved offensively.

Ch Supt Thomson said: “As anticipated, the majority of fans who attended Pittodrie on Sunday acted in a safe and responsible manner which assisted officers in ensuring the safety of those in attendance and the wider public. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them.

“In saying this, and despite repeated warnings from Police Scotland in the lead-up to the match, I am extremely disappointed that a minority of fans chose to conduct themselves in an antisocial and completely unacceptable way.

“Such behaviour is inexcusable. It also creates significant security issues which put your own safety and the safety of others at risk.

“For those who have committed offences and were not detected at the time I can assure you that you will face the consequences of your actions.”
