A Banffshire motorist has captured the moment a van driver edged into the middle of the road and forced a car to swerve to avoid a crash.

James Kerr uploaded the footage to social media this week in an attempt to highlight the dangers of a blind junction on the A98 Fraserburgh-Portsoy road which cuts through the centre of Banff.

At the junction leading to Fraserburgh’s court house and free parking provision, Mr Kerr caught the instant when the driver appeared to have difficulty seeing traffic past hedging at Low Street and almost caused a crash.

However last night, Mr Kerr, who recorded the video on Wednesday afternoon, stated he had sympathy with the unfortunate driver.

He said: “This junction is quite bad and has seen several accidents over the years.

“There can be several distractions for drivers with north and south bound traffic, a filter lane, pedestrians and traffic entering the road from Duff House.”

He added that since posting the video online, other people had commented on the height of the hedges which could have played a part in the incident.

He continued: “Luckily, there was no traffic coming towards the car which had to swerve into the filter lane, but on another day – and had the roads been wet – perhaps the outcome may have been different.”

Disturbingly, just feet from where an accident could have occurred, a mother could be seen pushing her young child in a buggy.

The footage is the latest to be captured in the area, with another motorist sharing his near miss with a Stagecoach bus which appeared to be travelling at night without its headlights on.

The video showed a motorist making his way through Skene Street in Macduff before having to pull into a space between two parked vehicles to avoid being wiped out by the oncoming bus.

Stagecoach has confirmed it is investigating the incident.
