Hit by lesson in rock music

- BY NATASHA MCKIM

I will be honest. Before last night I was young, naive and knew nothing of Walter Trout. Oh, how the last 25 years of my life have been missing some essential part of musical education. I went into Aberdeen’s Lemon Tree last night not knowing what to expect and was hit by a wall of enthusiastic fans of all ages.

Every good musician needs a successful warm-up act. After dancing around pretending I had the luscious long locks of Jared James Nichols I was certainly warmed up. They were good old metal with a touch of jazz influence. They are supporting Walter Trout and then Scorpion Child and are making their way around the UK.

“I think I fell a little bit in love with him”

At this point I had an expectation of the kind of music I was in for, but really I had underestimated Walter’s ability to rock. Walter came on stage with his waving band, said hello, and then they rocked the ceiling off the top of the lounge. Walter started off with some smooth shredding on his electric guitar before the keyboards, drums and the rest of the band kicked in. He is a man who can do magical things with his fingers.

Walter has been through his battles, faced ill health and come out the other side rocking and rolling.

I’ve never seen young artists do the things with a guitar that I saw this man do last night.

Having a musician like Walter Trout come to Aberdeen is fantastic. I think I fell a little bit in love with him.
