Tall order as Glasgow sign giant Samoa lock

Rugby union: Alainu’uese 6ft 6in and arrives from Waikato

-

Glasgow have signed Samoa under-20 international Brian Alainu’uese on a deal until the end of the season.

The New Zealand-born 22-year-old arrives from Mitre 10 Cup outfit Waikato, although the move remains subject to a visa and medical.

Alainu’uese is a product of Auckland’s Wesley College, whose alumni include All Black Malakai Fekitoa, Ulster’s Charles Piutau and the late Jonah Lomu.

The giant 6ft 8in lock played six times and scored three tries in his first season for Waikato and has stepped up to make two appearances for the Chiefs in Super Rugby.

Alainu’uese said: “I’m really excited about joining Glasgow. I’ve spoken to Chiefs coach Dave Rennie about the move and he told me great things about the club.

“Everyone in New Zealand knows that Glasgow Warriors are a great club and there are good people here.

“I watched Corey Flynn playing when I was growing up and Jarrod Firth spent some time at the Chiefs, so it’ll be good to get to know those boys, as well as the rest of the squad.

“From what I’ve seen Glasgow like to throw the ball around and play a fast game, and that’s the way I like to play, too.

“I’ll give it my best. I just want to give my all for Glasgow.”

Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “Brian has a real physical presence and has played well for Waikato in the Mitre Cup this season.

“He has the ability to play an offloading game and will help our set-piece play. With Greg Peterson, Scott Cummings and Tjiuee Uanivi injured, we’re delighted to secure the services of such a quality second row, and we’re looking forward to integrating him into our squad.”

Joe Schmidt has committed his future as Ireland head coach until the end of the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

The boost comes just before Ireland’s autumn series opener against New Zealand in Chicago.

New Zealander Schmidt took charge of Ireland in November 2013, since when he has masterminded back-to-back six nations titles, plus away victories against South Africa and Argentina.
