Tribute to ‘fantastic mentor’

Respect: Firefighter died last week after battle with lung cancer

- BY JOANNE WARNOCK

A 42-year-old fireman and former footballer has been described as a “fantastic” inspiration to everyone he knew.

The family of father-oftwo Paul Morrison, who died last week after a short battle with cancer, have spoken of their heartbreak.

Born in Aberdeen, Mr Morrison lived in Bridge of Don and attended Oldmachar Academy, subsequently serving his apprenticeship as an electrician with Richard Irvine, prior to joining the fire service in 1997.

He spent nearly twenty years in their ranks, and was described by colleagues as professional, hardworking and dedicated to any role he undertook in the service.

The Highland League and Junior league stalwart was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer last summer and had been involved in fundraising for his chosen charity Sarcoma UK before his death last Wednesday.

Mr Morrison is survived by his wife Michelle and two daughters. Last night a family friend said: “We are all deeply saddened and heartbroken with the sudden passing away of Paul and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

“He was a well-liked and respected individual who was a fantastic mentor and role model to all other firefighters and aspiring officers.

“Paul made everyone he met feel like they were his best friend. Always there for friends and family and surrounding himself in the best of company at all times, constantly laughing, joking and pulling pranks, he was the best company you could ever have.

“Paul also played for numerous football teams in the north-east including Cove Rangers, Arbroath, Ellon, Stonehaven and Culter juniors. All of which have nothing but fond memories of a fantastic footballer and friend.”

Captained by Colin Hendry, the Aberdeen and Scotland Legends XI recently took on a select team which was made up of Mr Morrison’s team-mates from his career to raise money for cancer charities, along with a sold-out sportsman’s dinner – the final figure has yet to be confirmed.

“They would also like to thank all the staff at Roxburghe House who have helped at this difficult time.”

Mr Morrison’s funeral will be held in Aberdeen’s Crematorium on Friday, March 3.
