Search for man thought to have fallen from cliff

A search for an 18-year-old man reported to have fallen from a cliff is being widened.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at Arbroath Cliffs in Angus at about 1pm on Saturday.

A multi-agency search operation involving a coastguard helicopter, rescue teams and lifeboat crews was in the area. The search was stood down on Saturday evening and resumed yesterday morning.

Chief Inspector David McIntosh, of Police Scotland, said: “Immediate coastline searches at Arbroath cliffs have been carried out this morning involving coastguard and lifeboat teams.

“Moving forward today, the search parameters will be widened as we extend our operation further up and down the coastline.

“We remain in close contact with his family at this very difficult time.”

The UK coastguard said it was alerted by police on Saturday to a report of a person in the water below the cliffs.

A spokeswoma­n for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “Aberdeen coastguard operations centre coordinate­d an intensive search of the area during Saturday afternoon.

“The search was suspended during the hours of darkness and resumed on Sunday morning with nothing found. The incident has been handed over to Police Scotland.”
