Can we just call it Glasinburgh now?

-

SIR, – The BBC has now announced the introduction of a dedicated TV service for “Scotland”. Can we clarify what this will be as I now predict that it will not be a national TV station, therefore from the outset why don’t we label it “BBC Glasinburgh”.

Why do I say this? Well it has not gone unnoticed that over the years there has been a gradual migration of local services, accountability and decision making away from the north and northeast to the central belt in the name of efficiency. We have seen the police go to Tulliallan, fire and rescue to Cambuslang and water to Dunfermline. Even the tax office is going from Aberdeen.

When Grampian TV reverted to STV we saw the change in focus, so much so the weekend “local” news has no local focus whatsoever unless something of national importance occurs.

Even Scotrail sends manual staff all over Scotland from Glasgow for the most mundane task. NHS to follow? Watch this space.

Each one of these moves has taken jobs away from the area, without any efficiencies in service delivery, in some cases actually resulting in a reduction in efficiency, but each has increased the

reliance on a struggling oil and gas sector for employment. Of course it has worked wonders for employment in the “Glasinburgh” area. So what have the Romans done for us? Even Monty Python would struggle with that one. Gordon Daniels, Aurora, Bourtie, Inverurie
