Man is charged after horror fireball crash

Police: Move following appeal over BMW driver

- BY JAMIE ROSS

A man has been charged in connection with a two-vehicle crash in Aberdeenshire.

A car and a van collided on the A947 Turriff to Aberdeen road, near Fyvie, earlier this month.

The 17-year-old driver of the Vauxhall Corsa was airlifted to hospital, while 26-year-old David Buchanan was taken by ambulance after crawling from the burning wreckage of his van.

Police later launched an appeal to track down the driver of a blue BMW which was seen on the road at the time.

And yesterday, officers confirmed a 27-year-old had been charged in connection with the incident on March 9. He is expected to appear at Banff Sheriff Court at a later date.

Last week, Mr Buchanan described the moments leading up the collision and the pain he felt as he dragged himself from the burning van.

Mr Buchanan, who lives in Dundee, also thanked the passers-by who stopped to help him and the driver of the other car.

He said he was in “excruciating pain” but saw that his van’s engine was on fire and needed to get out.

“The doors had been caved in but I managed to crawl out of the window,” he said.

“There was someone screaming from the other car but no one could get him out.

“The fire service had to cut him free.

“A lot of people stopped to help – they were brilliant.”

Sergeant Rob Warnock, who led the investigation, yesterday thanked the public for their help in the matter.

He said: “We would like to thank the public for assistance provided in relation to the incident.”
