Man in court after 33-year-old injured in city attack
A man has been charged following an attack in Aberdeen city centre which left another man critically injured.
The 27-year-old accused of the assault is due to appear today at Aberdeen Sheriff Court.
The alleged incident took place outside the Co-op store on Union Street on Wednesday night.
As a result a 33-year-old man had to be taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for life-threatening head injuries.
Officers were called out at around 9.30pm to the store.
George McCabe, 71, was in a nearby pub as the incident was happening.
He said: “I was drinking in town. I saw a lot of police turn up. Hopefully the guy is OK.”
Neil MacWilliam, 66, who lives in the city centre, added: “It’s rare that something like this happens. You normally think of Aberdeen as a safe place.”
Gemma Muir, 49, said: “I’m up and down here (Union Street) all the time, like most people. It’s shocking to hear about.
“It makes you realise you need to keep your wits about you, especially at night.”
Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Rhona Di Meola said: “Thank you to the members of the public who assisted with this inquiry. I would also like to stress that this was a contained and isolated incident and that at no stage was there any threat to the wider public.
“I would still encourage anyone who was in the area around the time in question, in particular between 9.25pm and 9.55pm, to please contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 anonymously if you think you have information which could help.”
