Three charged in connection with death of Gary Clampett

Investigation: Handyman died in house after ‘large-scale disturbance’

- BY JAMIE ROSS

Three men have been charged in connection with the death of a north-east handyman.

Gary Clampett died in a house during a “large-scale disturbance” in Fraserburgh early on Sunday. The alarm was raised after neighbours heard shouting, screaming and loud banging.

A murder investigation was launched, with police going door-to-door and stepping up patrols in the town.

Last night, police confirmed three local men, aged 36, 39 and 45 had been charged in connection with Mr Clampett's death.

They are expected to appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court today.

The man leading the investigation, Detective Inspector Gary Winter, from the murder investigation team, last night said inquiries were still ongoing despite the arrests.

He said: “I would like to thank the members of the public who have assisted with our investigation so far. I would also like to thank the local community for your continued patience.

“Our inquiries are still ongoing and a strong police presence will remain in the area while these are carried out."

Police were called to Fernie Place in Fraserburgh ar about 4am on Sunday, following reports of a disturbance.

It is believed 39-year-old Mr Clampett was stabbed.

Although paramedics raced to help, Mr Clampett – who was married to wellknown local woman Sharon Graham – could not be saved.

A massive investigation was launched, with the culde-sac sealed off until yesterday afternoon as forensics officers examined the area.

The team, clad in white body suits, boots, gloves and masks, could be seen going in and out of two properties.

Police also announced they would be carrying out high-visibility patrols to assure the community it was an “isolated" incident – while also hoping to gather more information.

Inspector Kevin Goldie, who is based in Fraserburgh, said: “We are providing a bit of reassurance to the community following the incident at Fernie Place. We will have a team of house-to-house officers out this evening and over the next couple of days. It is an opportunity for people who have concerns or who have information about the incident to speak to them.

“There’s obviously concerns but it is still safe in Fraserburgh. This has been an isolated and contained incident and we’re quite happy that there is no wider risk to the community.

“It has been totally out of the norm.”
