A law graduate was the youngest of three sisters to receive her degree yesterday while her proud siblings watched on.

Fiona James, from Oldmeldrum, enjoyed her time at Aberdeen University so much she has decided to return in September to complete a law diploma.

Yesterday her older sisters, Sarah, who is a teacher, and Katie, who is a vet, attended her graduation ceremony at Elphinstone Hall alongside mum Jane James.

She said: “I originally wanted to be a geologist but realised I wasn’t that keen on science so my mum pointed me in the direction of studying law.

“I think having a law degree opens a lot of doors.

“Aberdeen is a small university so you get to know everyone a lot better. It is very friendly and all the staff are so supportive.”

The former Albyn School pupil added: “I didn’t know anyone when I came here but I have made a lot of friends and I have worked hard to get results. It is a hard degree but it is satisfying.”

Also celebrating her law degree was Catriona Hendry, from Kemnay, who has been a member of the university’s cheerleading squad for the past three years.

The 21-year-old, who trained from 6.30-10am three days a week on top of her legal studies, said: “It is a mixture of dance, gymnastics and stunting.

“It is a big society with about 60 girls in it so it was a great way to make friends and get healthy.

“I just got hooked on going to the training.

“We have also been to a lot of competitions which has been amazing.

“I’ve had a really great time at university.

“Doing a law degree has been a lot of work and you have to learn to prioritise, but it has been really good meeting such a lot of friends.”

Catriona celebrated her success with parents James and Audrey Hendry, and aunt Allison Campbell, who was visiting from New Zealand.

She is now planning to embark on a masters degree in business studies.
