Sellafield tower goes nowhere fast
A 60-year-old, 60-metre chimney, pictured, at the Sellafield nuclear site in Cumbria is being demolished – at the rate of one metre a week.
The chimney is being removed over several years but Sellafield said its position – on top of a 61-metrehigh building – makes this complicated.
Conventional demolition techniques cannot be used in the crowded, hazardous environment.
