ON THIS DAY IN SPORT
■ 1969 – Liverpool v West Ham was the first football game to be shown in colour on BBC’s Match of the Day programme. Liverpool won 2-0.
■ 2006 – Former Don Mike Newell kept his job as Luton manager but was severely reprimanded by the club after his high-profile verbal attack on female officials and chairman Bill Tomlins. Newell was sacked four months later, with the club struggling near the foot of the Championship.
