Council will not build to replace crowded school

-

Aberdeen City Council has ruled out building a new school to replace an overcrowded primary.

St Peter’s School on King Street is now over capacity and the local authority had considered rehousing pupils in the nearby area.

At this week’s education committee councillor Martin Greig urged the council to consider a new building for the school.

However, his move was voted down by 23 votes to one.

Speaking after the event Mr Greig criticised this decision.

He said: “It is too early to reject the option of a new build.

“We should be doing all we can to ensure that young people are provided with the finest school building possible.

“The final decision is a long way off and will depend on the future budget situation.

“The budget can be highly variable and is a matter of making political choices.

“Education should be the priority in the council finances.”
