Hello and welcome to our very first Kids’ Kitchen supplement!

-

When lockdown first began, it created a bit of a panic in the aisles, with some shoppers stocking up on items that resulted in food shortages.

So what do you do if you can’t buy your favourite ready-meal or sweet treat?

You make your own...

It was clear that people were taking a greater interest in what they ate and were willing to spend more time preparing and cooking their own dishes from scratch.

And it wasn’t just the adults who were interested – youngsters were enjoying helping their parents in the kitchen, too.

Having discovered that licking the bowl and big spoon is one of life’s greatest pleasures, they realised there’s a tremendous amount of pleasure, and sense of achievement, to be had by seeing the cakes, savouries and pastas they helped make, come together.

And, without realising it, they were learning valuable life skills, and, by carefully following recipes, weighing out ingredients, etc, improving their maths and reading skills at the same time.

We launched our Kids’ Kitchen section in

the menu at the beginning of lockdown, and it’s been a runaway success.

Readers began to send us in photos showing how the recipes had turned out, but it was the look of delight on the kids’ faces that we loved best and wanted to share with others.

Thank you so much to all the parents, grandparents and supporting adults who have taken the time to send us photographs – we really appreciate it.

These pictures capture a remarkable moment in our lives, a period when we’ve spent more time than normal with our families and learned new skills together.

Within the pages of this supplement you’ll find a selection of wonderful photographs showing happy children having fun in the kitchen.

There are also new recipes to try at home, fun activities, puzzles and even a couple of competitions for you to enter.

Keep up the good work boys and girls, you’re doing a fantastic job, and who knows, you may end up on MasterChef one day as a result of your newfound skills!
