More disruption ahead on A96

- BY DAVID MACKAY

Motorists are facing fresh roadworks misery next month with another closure on a busy trunk route.

The A96 will be closed in Elgin for two weeks while major work to upgrade underground pipes in the town reaches the final phase.

The trunk route reopened earlier this month after being closed one-way for six weeks as part of essential works. Now, westbound motorists will be diverted off the busy thoroughfare between the Alexandra Road and East Road roundabouts from Monday, October 10.

Gas company SGN has planned the works, following discussions with Moray Council and Bear Scotland, to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.

Project manager Alan Howie said: “We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.”

Diversions will be set up via Maisondieu Road and the A941. Before the A96 is closed, SGN will begin work on South College Street on Monday, September 5, between the junction with Pansport Road and the footpath to Cathedral Road. The pedestrian route from South College Street to the A96 will also be shut for seven days.
