Whisky sector vital to UK

There

are fewindustries that do not fear the potential impact of the UKleaving the European Union.

So some may see the whisky industry’s call for special protection measures as just another one joining the long queue of businesses looking for reassurances.

But the Government cannot underestimate the importance of the £5billion sector, not just to Scotland, but to the UK as a whole.

Distillers represent some of the largest employers in the north of Scotland and the impact of additional financial pressures from extra Brexit-related taxes doesn’t bear thinking about.

If Westminster is able to pledge support to a single company such as Nissan – then it is difficult to see how it can’t throw its weight behind the needs of the whisky industry.
