Smuggling linked to rise in gun crimes

More guns are being smuggled on to the streets of cities across the UK, Britain’s most senior police officer has said. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said a rise in gun crime in the capital is being put down to a rise in the number of weapons coming into the country. He said: “We’ve seized more firearms than ever before. In the previous year we’ve seized 714 guns.” Ricky Tomlinson has said he is “glad” he was unaware that Caroline Aherne had cancer because it would have been “painful” for him to see. The actor, who starred in classic British sitcom The Royle Family with Aherne, who died in July aged 52, added that he will “love her forever”.
