‘UK should attend talks’
Three in four Britons think the UK should be represented at nuclear disarmament talks at the United Nations, a survey says.
The YouGov poll, commissioned by campaign group Abolition 2000 UK, showed that 75% of those asked thought British officials should be sent to the talksonMarch 27, with16% undecided and 9% believing they should not attend.
The government will not be attending the talks in New York, titled the Conference To Negotiate A Legally Binding Instrument To Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, Leading Toward Their Total Elimination.
The online survey of 1,951 people revealed that those aged 65 and over were the most fervent supporters of Britain being represented.
The Foreign Office said the government’s position had been set out by the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Sir Alan Duncan.
He said: “We do not believe these negotiations will lead to effective progresson global nuclear disarmament.”
