‘UK should attend talks’

Three in four Britons think the UK should be represente­d at nuclear disarmamen­t talks at the United Nations, a survey says.

The YouGov poll, commission­ed by campaign group Abolition 2000 UK, showed that 75% of those asked thought British officials should be sent to the talksonMar­ch 27, with16% undecided and 9% believing they should not attend.

The government will not be attending the talks in New York, titled the Conference To Negotiate A Legally Binding Instrument To Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, Leading Toward Their Total Eliminatio­n.

The online survey of 1,951 people revealed that those aged 65 and over were the most fervent supporters of Britain being represente­d.

The Foreign Office said the government’s position had been set out by the Minister of State for Foreign and Commonweal­th Affairs Sir Alan Duncan.

He said: “We do not believe these negotiatio­ns will lead to effective progresson global nuclear disarmamen­t.”
