Stirling double delight at Lossie
Stirling University students won both the men’s and women’s titles at the Scottish student golf championships at the Old and New Courses of Moray Golf Club’s Lossiemouth links yesterday. Laird Shepherd, who hails from Sussex, finished with an eightunder-par total of 274 (67, 66, 73, 68) and triumphed in the men’s championship by eight shots from Riccardo Cellerino, of the University of the Highlands and Islands. Cellerino scored 67, 74, 68 and 71 for 280. Third was Stirling’s Chris Maclean on 283. English-born Gemma Batty, who moved her home to Moffat so that she could qualify to play for Scotland by residence, made virtually all the running to win the women’s crown by two strokes from Irish international Sinead Sexton, like Gemma, a Stirling student. Batty had rounds of 71, 71, 70 and 74 for a sixunder-par total of 286. Sexton, the only other female under par for the 72 holes, shot 71, 71, 70 and 76. Third was Alexa Hammer (St Andrews), who had her worst two scores over the final 36 holes, 75 and 74 for 293.
