But Grieve could be cup doubt for Kiltarlity men

- BY BILL McALLISTER

Vice-captain Lewis Tawse’s welltaken double earned Lovat a 2-0 home win against Glasgow Mid Argyll which lifts the Kiltarlity men up to fifth place in the Marine Harvest Premiership after a slow start to the campaign.

But they have a double worry over Daniel Grieve for this weekend’s Camanachd Cup match at Glen Urquhart.

“Daniel is an injury doubt after being clattered by team-mate Calum Cruden,” said manager Fraser Gallacher, pictured below.

“He is also on the cusp of a suspension and we’ll find out in the next couple of days if it applies on Saturday.”

Tawse netted in each half with Mid Argyll’s goalkeeper Robert Dunnings saving a Greg Matheson penalty.

“Lewis gave a cracking performance,” said Gallacher. “He produced two controlled half swings from the edge of the box for his goals, instead of hammering the ball and risking it flying anywhere.

“Danny Kelly was excellent in midfield in a good game and we’re looking to carry this form in to the cup tie.”

Bottom side Lochaber conjured up the surprise league result of the day with a 3-2 win at Glen Urquhart which gave them their first league win of the season.

The Spean Bridge men had scored only twice in six league games but they rallied from 2-0 down to grab precious points.

Neale Reid and James MacPherson had appeared to put Glen in control, but a Brennan Macdonald penalty pulled one back before the interval.

Shaun Nicholson scored the equaliser in 62 minutes then 12 minutes from the end Kevin Ferguson grabbed the winner which gives his side a major boost.

Kingussie manager Dallas Young praised Newtonmore after his side had lost 2-0 in the Badenoch derby at the Eilan.

“Newtonmore showed our

young players the next step we have to take,” said Young. “They were collectively slightly better than us all over the pitch and they were much sharper to the ball.

“However, we’re not that far off, and we’ll learn from this defeat. A couple of defensive mistakes were quickly punished by a good team.”

Veteran Glen Mackintosh again turned up trumps with a goal on the quarter hour mark and the important second goal on the hour. It was his second successive double and takes his tally to 10 goals in his last six games.

Newtonmore’s seventh win in eight outings means they have risen to fourth place, four points behind Kyles Athletic from the same number of games.

Kyles lost their 100% league record when were held to a 1-1 home draw by Oban Camanachd, but the point was enough to take them clear at the top.

Roddy Macdonald put Athletic in to an early lead, but Daniel MacVicar levelled for the Mossfield men eight minutes in to the second half.
