A HILLWALKER has died after being knocked down by a campervan in Glencoe yesterday in another tragedy on a Highland road.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the horror incident, which happened on the A82 Inverness to Glasgow road, near Altnafeadh.

A major 54-mile diversion was put in place while investigations were car- ried out, causing long tailbacks and delays. Sergeant Gregor Hay said: “Our thoughts at this time are with everyone affected by this tragic incident.”

It was the second serious crash on north roads within 24 hours after two men were injured on the A9 at Daviot, outside Inverness.

The Renault Scenic they were travelling in was involved in a collision with a Nissan Navara.

A hillwalker has died after being knocked down by a campervan on a busy Highland road.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward following the tragedy on the A82 Inverness to Glasgow road in Glencoe yesterday lunchtime.

It was the second serious accident on Highland roads within 24 hours, following a crash between a car and a pick-up truck on the A9 at Daviot on Monday night.

That too prompted a plea for witnesses. In the Glencoe incident, the man was knocked down by a Fiat campervan minutes after midday.

He died at the scene. The occupants of the campervan were uninjured.

It is understood that the man is not local to the Highland area.

His next of kin have been informed and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course, police said.

The road was closed for more than five hours to allow for a collision investigation to take place, with drivers facing a lengthy 54mile diversion via the A85 Oban to Perth road and the A828 Connel to Ballachulish road.

Sergeant Gregor Hay said: “Our thoughts at this time are with every- one affected by this tragic incident.

“Our inquiries are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact us as soon as possible.

“Please call police in the road policing unit in Fort William on 101, quoting reference R050438, with any information you may have.”

A social media user wrote: “Saw a hiker hit by a caravan in Glencoe earlier. Please take care when crossing Highland roads, they are dangerous for pedestrians.”

Another wrote: “Thoughts and prayers are with his family and hope the occupants of the campervan can get over their ordeal.”

The road closure caused massive tailbacks and slow traffic on the diversion route stretching as far away as outside Oban.

Police are also appealing for information following the crash at Daviot on Monday night.

The collision occurred on the northbound dual carriageway section of the A9 at about 9.10pm.

Two vehicles were involved, a red Renault Scenic and a silver Nissan Navara pick-up.

The occupants of the Renault, two men aged 25 and 27-years-old, were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with serious injuries. Neither are thought to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The occupants of the Nissan, two men aged 29 and 46 received minor injuries.

Police asked anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them on 101 quoting reference NN23462/17.

“Saw a hiker hit by a caravan in Glencoe. Please take care crossing roads”
