Calderwood says thank you following supporters’ rally

-

Former Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood has thanked Dons supporters for their messages after he revealed he is living with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

The 62-year-old, pictured, who spent five years in charge at Pittodrie, publicised his condition in an attempt to raise awareness.

Calderwood, who also managed at Ross County, Dunfermline and Kilmarnock as well as clubs in Holland, was diagnosed two years ago.

He said: “I have had lots of great messages from the supporters, which has been really nice.

“The chairman Stewart Milne phoned me and we are going to meet up soon, which is great as he is a very busy man.

“I hope going public with the condition will help make it easier for other people who are going through the same thing to be able to talk about it.”

Calderwood says he remains an avid follower of football and keeps a close eye on his former side Aberdeen.

The Dons take on another of his former clubs on Saturday when Kilmarnock visit Pittodrie and he added: “I still watch a lot of football, both on television and going to games.

“Aberdeen have made a great start to the season, they dropped a couple of points at the weekend against Hearts but that was never going to be an easy game, especially in Craig Levein’s first game in charge.

“Hopefully Aberdeen can keep it going this season. Kilmarnock have struggled so far this season but they have some good young players at the club.

“I hope they can get out of trouble but I expect Aberdeen to be too strong for them on Saturday.”
