EYEWITNESS ‘Cafes were empty, food still on tables’

- BY KIERAN BEATTIE

A north-east dad who was in Munich when the gunmen struck said people abandoned their meals and shoes in a state of confusion to get themselves to safety.

David Scott, 52, is in the German city on holiday with his girlfriend, and was on a metro train when the shootings began.

The electrical engineer and father-of-two from Aberdeen managed to steer clear of the most dangerous areas around the shopping mall, and spent last night well away from the city centre in safety.

Mr Scott said: “We were actually doing a tour of the Allianz Arena where Bayern Munich play, and we had taken the tube at about 6.30pm.

“We were going through a number of stations, but then the train stopped and didn't get going again.

“There were a couple of announcements in German, which I don't speak.

“The first one most of the passengers spoke over, they didn't seem very concerned, but then on the second announcement the passengers went very quiet and paid attention, before we evacuated the train.

“Everyone was pouring out of the station, and we saw people leaving in their droves out of restaurants, clubs, bars and that.

“We heard sirens blaring and saw choppers flying around, and people were hiding behind pillars. Nobody was sure what was happening.

“The restaurants were all empty, there was food still on tables.

“We saw some people had abandoned their shoes in some streets as well, and we realised something serious had really happened.

“No one seemed to know what was going on, where to look or where to run to, and there were police with guns everywhere, but it was more confusion than panic.

“We got as far away from the city centre as possible to wait for things to calm down.

“Most people were very calm, I don't think a lot of people realised what was going on at the time, but by looking at the way things are going this has been a very serious incident.”
