New faces shinty talent show
Players staking claim in Caol Cup
Oban Camanachd hotshot DanielMacVicar will make his debut leading the South attack in tomorrow’s Caol Cup under-21 representative game at Jubilee Park, Ballachulish, while another debutant teenager, Skye’s Will Cowie, is poised to figure in the North attack.
MacVicar and Cowie will be out to grab the chance to book their places in the under21 international against Ireland now that the likes of Lovat’s Greg Matheson, FraserHeath, of Glen Urquhart, and Newtonmore’s Calum Stewart are ineligible.
It will certainly be a talent show as North have nine players making their debutat this level, while the South have 14 making their bow.
By contrast, Lovat’s Michael Mackenzie will be playing in this fixture for the third year in succession, although clubmate Danny Kelly is one of the debutants.
Lochaber goalkeeper Calum MacDonald, who won the man-of-the-match medal in the MacTavish Cup final, is set to step between the North sticks in succession to Skye’s Iain MacLeod.
ButInveraray goalkeeper ScottMacLachlan is one of only four survivors in the South side from last year.
Defender Innes Blackhall, of Kilmallie, has caught the eye in his team’s fine season, while Beauly midfielder Calum Morrison has also been in fine form.
The other North new caps include Inverness at- tacker Charlie Macdonald, Lochaber’s Duncan Mackinnon, Euan Lloyd, of Glen Urquhart, and Newtonmore forwardNeil Stewart, who has had a successful first-team run. By contrast, Kyle McMartin has yet to make his first-team debut for Kyles Athletic although clubmate Ross MacRae, son of former Scotland player Dan, has figured strongly this year.
Oban Celtic duo Andy Macdonald and AllyMacKerracher and John McNulty, of Mid Argyll, are, with MacLachlan, the only members of last year’s South side retained. Oban Celtic supply four of the squad.
