Sunshine, crowds and livestock at Lochaber
Show: Winners named in sheep, cattle and pony classes
The sunshoneonLochaber show at the weekend, where crowds gathered to enjoy a good turnout of livestock.
In the sheep lines, it was the North Country Cheviot champion from Iain MacKay, Torloisk Farm, Mull, that took the interbreed title. The four-sheartup beat the Blackface champion from John Nudds, Torr-Na-Faire, Morven into reserve overall.
It was the Highland leader from Leys Castle Estate that took the top award in the cattle. Brought out by Dale Scott, the 2014-born heifer, Dosan 28th of Leys is a well-known show winner, having taken championships at several shows this summer.
Standing reserve overall cattle was the cross cattle champion. From Robert Wright of Woodend, Ardgower, it was the sevenyear-old Charolais cross cow, Krystie, that took the ticket here.
In the Highland ponies, the ridden winner, Ruby of Sunnyneuk, from Kirsty Mann from Rushven that lead the way, winning the overall championship. ..............................................................
RESULTS – HORSES Highland ponies: Kirsty Mann, Rushven with the nine-year-old ridden mare, Ruby of Sunnyneuk. A well-known show winner in these parts, Ruby also won at Lochaber last year, and stood champion at Arisaig earlier this summer. Reserve – Sarah Miller, Achnacary Estate, Spean Bridge with Lochiel Iona. This home-bred 24-year-old mare will retire from the shows after this summer. CATTLE Highland: Leys Castle Farm, Estate Office, Leys Castle, Inverness, with two-year-old home-bred heifer Dosan 28th of Leys, by Jock of Lyntown and out of Dosan 16th of Leys. She was champion at Nairn, Fettercairn, and Grantown and reserve at the Black Isle. Reserve – Sydney and Maureen O'Hara, Cnoc Fold, Oban. Brought out by stockman, Iain McKay, the veteran eight-yearold cow, Cannach 27 of Achnacloich, was following a championship win at Appin the previous week. Pedigree cattle: M. and C. Cameron, Strone Farm, Lochaber with the Limousin heifer, Stronefield Lena. 15 months old, on her first show outing, she is by Hawksleaf Harvard and out of a homebred cow. Reserve – M. and C. Cameron with the Limousin cow, Stronefield France. This third calver is by a Sympasired bull, and is also out of a homebred cow. Cross cattle: Robert Wright, Woodend, Ardgower, Fort William with Krystie, a sevenyear-old Charolais cross cow. She has also stood commercial champion and Arisaig and breeding cattle champion at Lorn this summer. Reserve – Robert Wright with the calf class winner. April-born, this bull calf is by Craigatoke Damibull and out of the champion cow, Krystie. SHEEP Blackface: John Nudds, TorrNa-Faire, Morven with the ewe lamb winner. By a home-bred sire, she is out of a Drumgrange ewe by £60,000 Auldhouseburn. She was also reserve overall at Lorn this year. Reserve – John Nudds with the ewe. By £60,000 Auldhouseburn, she is out of a Drumgrange ewe. She stood first in her class at Lorn. North Country Cheviot: Iain MacKay, Torloisk Farm, Mull with the four-shear tup. Bought from Ted Fox last year, he is by Castle Grant Jackpot and out of a St John’s Kirk ewe. Reserve – Fiona Boa, Dervaig, Mull with the ewe lamb. She is by a tup that was bought at Dingwall and out of an Armadale-bred mother. Any other breed sheep: Angus C McCall , Croft 2, Mull with the Texel shearling. Homebred, he is by Cambwell Upper Crust. This was his first show win. Reserve – M. and S. Cameron, 2 Balmaglaster, Lochaber with the homebred Beltex ewe. This was her first show outing. Cross sheep: M. and S. Cameron, 2 Balmaglaster, Lochaber with the ewe lamb. A Beltex cross, she is homebred on both sides. Reserve – M and S. Cameron with the ewe with twin lambs at foot. This Beltex cross ewe is rearing Beltex lambs by a homebred tup.
