- The EU Sustainable Energy Week is the EU’s leading effort to promote secure, clean and efficient energy, amplifying sustainable energy choices. The week runs until Friday, June 23. For further information visit http://eusew.eu/lookenergy-days

This is the fifth year that AD Heating has taken part in EU Sustainable Energy Week – and this time it is offering something a little bit different – a Make Do and Mend community event on Thursday, June 22 – and you are all invited!

Organised by local public and private organisations, EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) Energy Days are activities and events that raise awareness of energy efficiency and renewables. This year AD Heating would like to highlight that, in a world of finite resources, we all need to repair, re-use and re-purpose the resources that are available to us.

The firm’s vision is to have folk bring along items which are broken. Their team of “useful” people will attempt to repair or suggest how best to proceed to have said item repaired.

If the item cannot be repaired, they will have experts on hand who can advise how to upcycle, repurpose or recycle it.

Make Do and Mend was the name of a pamphlet issued by the British Ministry of Information in the midst of World War II.

It was intended to provide housewives with useful tips on how to be both frugal and stylish in times of harsh rationing. With its thrifty design ideas and advice on reusing old clothing, the pamphlet was an indispensable guide for households.

Readers were advised to create pretty ‘decorative patches’ to cover holes in worn garments; unpick old jumpers to re-knit chic alternatives; turn men’s clothes into women’s; as well as darn, alter and protect against the ‘moth menace’. An updated version of the book has also been released, offering similar frugal advice for 21st century families.

As well as the AD Heating staff on hand to assist with repairs and advice, a number of local groups will be exhibiting including:

Turriff Men’s Shed are coming along with their range of re-purposed and upcycled items, and their expertise.

Community Waste Officer from Aberdeenshire Council for expert advice on recycling.

The Wellpark Clinic with special advice on how to ‘mend your back’.

Fyvie Scouts will also be contributing by being on hand to serve a cuppa and a fly piece, as well as working towards some of their badges.

AD Heating will offer visitors the chance to have a go at their own make do and mend project – so come along to the Make Do and Mend Day – a free event on Thursday, June 22 from 2.30-6.30pm at the Old Bus Depot in Fyvie.

Don’t forget to bring in your own items to repair or re-purpose, whether it’s a bicycle with a puncture, a button missing on a shirt or an idea for something amazing.
