Roads to close at night for work

- BY JAMIE MACKENZIE

Highland motorists face three weeks of disruption as a £725,000 project gets under way to widen and resurface two sections of a north road.

Improvements will take place on a section of the A86 Newtonmore to Laggan route at Biallidbeg, then a stretch at Balgowan.

Work will start on Sunday and is due to finish on Thursday, October 5, and will take place each night between 7pm and 5am but not on Friday and Saturday nights.

Overnight road closures will be needed during the resurfacing.

A diversion route will be in place via the A889 and A9 during working hours, with access being maintained as much as possible.

The road closure will be lifted during the day but a 30mph limit will remain in place until the projects are finished as traffic will be travelling on a temporary surface.

The road at Biallidbeg will be widened by 5ft and a centre line will be painted on the carriageway, along with two new priority systems at culvert crossings to improve road safety.

Visibility will also be improved on the route as sections of the embankment will be cut back as well as new verge marker posts installed.

The project at Balgowan will start soon after these works are completed.

The verges will also be strengthened at this section, removing ruts and other defects.

The project follows on from improvements carried out on the route near Laggan Wolftrax and Tullochroam earlier this month.

The work will be carried out by Bear Scotland through a Transport Scotland investment.
