Sure as eggs is eggs, animals suffer

-

SIr, – I object to Iain Maciver’s article on veganism. Vegans care passionately about animals and their welfare.

Cows get incredibly distressed when their calves are separated from them shortly after birth so that we can have dairy products.

They have to produce about six times as much milk as is natural. Some are kept inside 24/7 and are just milking machines.

Chickens in the wild would lay two clutches of eggs twice a year, make their own nests and look after their chicks, instead of laying 300, which exhausts them and depletes them of calcium.

Vegans do not ask “weird questions” as Maciver states. I found his article unamusing when he tried to be funny.

Animals use up an incredible of amount of food and water, and also produce methane, contributing to climate change.

The EU sanctions bullfighting, force-feeding geese, caged pigs, and animals have to be sent live from the UK to the EU because of EU legislation.

These are just some of the reasons why people like myself are vegan, because we think it is wrong to use and abuse animals.

The Church should also take a stand. It is remarkably lacking on moral issues when it comes to animals.
