Lord’s life full of scandal and strife

The man known as the Fox, Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, was born around 1667.

He became chieftain of the Clan Fraser and was a Jacobite supporter.

Simon Fraser secured the title and estates through a forced marriage to Amelia, Lady Lovat but her family were so outraged that he was forced to flee to France.

During his stay he converted to Catholicism and became part of the Jacobite court exiled there.

He returned to Scotland, found out about a possible uprising and promptly betrayed the plot to the government.

During the 1715 uprising, he fluctuated between both sides, and was pardoned by the government.

But in 1745 his luck ran out. Although he professed his support for the Jacobites, he again told the government that he was supporting them.

This time he was not believed and, after the Jacobite’s defeat at Culloden, Simon Fraser was forced to flee for his life but was captured – hiding in a hollow of a tree – near Mallaig.
