Islands’ appeal to turn lips blue

People across Orkney are being encouraged to turn their lips blue and take part in a life-saving campaign this month.

Members of staff from NHS Orkney Public Dental Service team have already been out and about sporting blue lips to raise awareness of the symptoms of mouth cancer and are appealing to other to help spread the message.

As part of the campaign, the group joined forces with staff at Tesco to show off their blue lips

“Early detection is absolutely the key”

and encourage shoppers to be aware of the importance of spotting potential signs of mouth cancer as early as possible.

More than 500 leaflets were given out to customers at Tesco urging people to be “mouth aware”.

The team also spoke to members of the public at Orkney Auction Mart.

Senior dental officer Nigel Pendrey said: “Anyone concerned about any changes in their mouth is encouraged to make an appointmen­t and get it examined.

“No one will think you are wasting their time if you want to get an area of concern in your mouth checked. Early detection is absolutely the key so if you are concerned please get checked out.”
