The Press and Journal (Inverness, Highlands, and Islands)

Letter from the editor

- BY FRANK O’DONNELL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

There are many reasons why readers buy a newspaper. Editors often imagine that the primary driver is the front page, the quality of the lead story, the picture and the headline.

But purchases are made for myriad purposes including the depth of local news, sport, features, business, birth notices and even the crossword.

This Saturday as part our ongoing improvements to your Saturday P&J we’re introducing a full-page general knowledge crossword. See page 19.

We are always looking to update and increase the content available, and reader feedback tells us that puzzles are incredibly popular.

The crossword has been designed to be tricky for one person to complete – there will be questions on everything from arts and the classics to football and pop music. So hopefully it can sit open on the kitchen table over the weekend and friends and family can help with those stubborn clues.

The general knowledge crossword is in addition to our usual page of puzzles in the main paper and the four pages of puzzles in the magazine. Plenty to keep you sharp.

your life magazine is also looking at a new Saturday quiz spread which will begin in next week’s paper, so look out for that.

Another innovation we are working on is interactive puzzles online. This will be available to digital subscribers and will allow you to fill in puzzle grids on your iPad, phone or laptop. This will be coming in the autumn.

In the meantime, there’s no prize for our new crossword – just the satisfaction of completion.

What I would love is for you to tell me if you enjoyed it. Was it too easy, or too hard? Or just about right?

You can email me at pj.editor@ajl.co.uk on this or any other matter. Happy weekend!
