Well snatch late win against Reds

- BY DANNY LAW

Aberdeen Women’s five-game unbeaten run came to a dramatic end with yesterday’s 3-2 loss against Motherwell at Balmoral Stadium.

The Dons were 2-0 and a player down at the interval but fought back to level the scores, only for Well to win the game in the dying embers.

The visitors took the lead in the third minute when Chloe Gover turned a Kayla Jardine cross into her own net. Motherwell doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark when a Laura Berry effort found the bottom corner.

It went from bad to worse for the Dons when Francesca Ogilvie was sent off in the second minute of first-half injury time.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Bayley Hutchinson pulled a goal back for the Dons in the 57th minute when she finished from a Jess Broadrick pass for her 28th goal of the campaign.

Aberdeen grabbed an equaliser in the 72nd minute when Eilidh Shore found Eva Thomson on the edge of the area who fired home. But disaster struck in the fifth minute of injury-time when Chelsie Watson headed home the winner at the death for Well.

Dons head coach Clint

Lancaster told the club website: “It was a slow start again from us which is frustrating. We were up against a good team with some good players who made it difficult for us. Certainly going down to 10 players again doesn’t help.

“But massive credit to the players who were out there in the second half as I thought they did really

well. We were unlucky to not get a point from that game. We had chances with only 10 players on the pitch to go and win the game.

“It wasn’t to be but it was a performance overall in the second half that we can be proud of. We just need to pick ourselves up because Wednesday is not far away.”

The result sees

Motherwell move above the Dons into seventh spot on goal difference, with both teams on 39 points with two games left. The Dons return to action on Wednesday evening with a home match against Dundee United in their penultimate SWPL fixture of the season before ending the campaign with a trip to Spartans on Sunday.
