WORKon the first phaseof the improvedseadefencesat Dawlish isapproachingcompletionand NetworkRailhassharedits plans for the remainingsectionof the £80millionproject.
Plansfor the next section of the new seawall, between Coastguardas nd Colonnade breakwatersi,ncludea newtaller concretewall with a wider public promenade,pedestrianaccessto the beachandfootbridgeto link the two partsof the seawall, plus an accessiblestationfootbridge with lifts.
Thetimber-built seaward platformat Dawlishstation will alsoberebuiltto improve accessibilityT.henew structure will providethe railwaywith greaterprotectionfrom risingsea levelsand extremeweather,while the new promenadewill be safer and moreaccessiblefor all visitors.
NetworkRailworkedwith engineeringconsultantArup to developthe schemeand laboratory-testedscalemodels of variousdesignsto seehow they copedwith simulatedwave conditionsbeforeselectingits preferredoption.Theproposals havenow beensubmittedto TeignbridgeDistrictCouncilfor planningpermission.
