Thompson grateful Smith was class act

GUY Thompson reckons George Smith’s influence has given him the best possible chance of making the Wasps No.7 jersey his own after England star James Haskell was ruled out until at least November.

With Haskell undergoing reconstructive surgery on the big toe he injured in the second match of England’s successful tour of Australia, Thompson is set to vie with fellow back rower Thomas Young to replace the club’s inspirational skipper.

Thompson had to bide his time last season, but with Wallabies legend Smith now departed the 29-year-old former Jersey openside is desperate to make his mark as Dai Young’s exciting young side target a winning season and silverware.

Thompson told The Rugby Paper: “James has been on fire and he got man-of-theseries down in Australia, which for me was well deserved.

“He was a great captain for us last year and he’s a natural leader of the boys, so to have someone who shows such passion is always great.

“But my ambition is to play as much as possible now and play my part in a massive season for the club.

“Reaching two semi-finals was amazing for us last season, but we quickly remembered that we didn’t make a final which we were disappointed about.

“We need to get back to the drawing board, work hard and be in the best position to challenge.

“There’s a good opportunity for me now but we know our back row is extremely blessed with some great players.

“Thomas Young plays well at openside, too, so whoever gets the opportunity to wear that No.7 shirt will need to do it justice.”

Thompson says the year he spent working alongside Smith was invaluable, adding:“I was a massive fan of George growing up and he’s one of the best ever to have played the game, so playing in the same position I learnt a huge amount.

“It’s quite strange when a superstar like him comes
