Haskell ‘devastated’ over injury blow

-

JAMES Haskell will not figure in England’s autumn internationals as he requires surgery on his big toe which will rule him out for at least four months.

Wasps flanker Haskell, 31, will almost certainly miss the Tests against Argentina, Australia, South Africa and Fiji, as well as the start of the Aviva Premiership.

Haskell missed the third Test in England’s 3-0 series whitewash against the Wallabies because of the injury.

Haskell later told fans, via Instagram:“It’s pretty devastating. It’s one of the first long-term injuries I’ve had but I’m in really good hands.

“I’m going to be out of the game for a little while but I’ve got to stay positive and I’ll come back a better player. I will work on little areas I need to and hopefully I will come back fitter and in better shape.

“I want to thank everyone for their kind words and all their support and I can’t wait to pull the yellow and gold jersey on again and, hopefully, England’s.”

The man of the series for the tour of Australia limped off the field in the second Test, with Teimana Harrison replacing him for the third match.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said: “We’re all really disappointed for James and we are all wishing him a speedy recovery.

“James’s performances with England, both in the series win over Australia and in England’s Six Nations success, have been hugely impressive. We know he’ll be working hard to come back in the best shape possible.”

Eddie Jones will have to step up his search for a new openside flanker, with Harrison, Jack Clifford and Matt Kvesic all keen to impress.

Haskell’s absence is also a huge blow for Wasps, given his imperious form.

Wasps begin their Premiership campaign in early September, while the opening four weekends of next season’s Champions Cup pool fixtures take place in October and December.

Wasps were semi-finalists in both competitions last term.
