Marcus: My time to star

- ■ By GARY FITZGERALD

MARCUS Watson is on a golden mission to step out of his more famous brother’s shadow and add to the growing family trophy cabinet.

The Newcastle Falcons flyer has the dream chance to grab some of the spotlight in Rio having seen sibling Anthony shine so brightly on the international stage.

Watson, right, three years older than Bath and England star Anthony, has been a key figure in the Sevens side for some time now. And his speed, skill and finishing prowess could decide whether the Team GB return with something shiny to show for their efforts. The 25-year-old has been in scintillating form in the build up and admits that watching Anthony thrive has given him a real thirst for medals. He insisted: “Anthony has had an incredible time with England since the World Cup, helping them win the Grand Slam and then that successful tour in Australia.

“We have always had a healthy competition since we were children and we help each other out as much as possible. We just want each other to do the best we can, and be the best we can, no matter what the situation.

“Our parents have certainly had a good time seeing him play in that Grand Slam winning game in Paris, and then travelling to Australia. I’m sure they will be out in Rio supporting me. It’s going to be an amazing experience.

“I’d love to be part of a winning side in Rio.”
