Gloucester can be great again-Scott

- ■ By NEALE HARVEY

SCOTLAND centre Matt Scott is targeting silverware this season with Gloucester - or he says he would not have moved from Edinburgh.

Despite the Cherry & Whites’ slow start to the season, the 36-cap Test star Scott has made an instant impact at Kingsholm, scoring two tries against Leicester and Worcester.

Scott believes Gloucester can aim for the Premiership title, telling The Rugby

Paper: “I don’t see any reason why we can’t be up there competing in the top four and we’re putting pressure on ourselves to achieve that.

“Attack-wise, a lot of what we’ve done has been exactly what we worked on in pre-season and we’ve played some good rugby.

“The attacking shape lends itself to creating space in the wide channels to our outside backs and we’re lucky to have back rows in Matt Kvesic and Ross Moriarty who can play almost like third centres and get offloads in.

“That’s been a big positive and although we didn’t manage to nail down those early victories, we know there’s a lot more to come from us.”

On his reasons for heading south, Scott, 25, explained: “I want to be the best player I can be and look back and say I tried different things to improve myself.

“Taking myself out of my comfort zone in Scotland and coming to a club where I only knew Greig Laidlaw means I must prove myself in a new league.

“I wasn’t talking to Gloucester at the time, but playing my first World Cup match for Scotland against Japan at Kingsholm last year gave me a really positive memory of the place and everyone I’ve spoken to since has only had good things to say.

“Jim Hamilton, Rory Lawson and Alasdair Dickinson loved it here and when you see other Scottish guys like Greig, Tim Visser and Ruaridh Jackson thriving in the Premiership, I thought it would benefit me as well and really develop my game.

“You want to win trophies and Gloucester have got big ambitions to be back in the top four, where a club of this stature really should be.”
