Visser not prepared to hand title to Saracens

- ■ By GARY FITZGERALD

FLYING Dutchman Tim Visser aims to hit top speed in time to derail Saracens impressive start.

The Harlequins wing also hopes to rediscover his best form and force his way back into the Scotland side for the Six Nations.

A bad knee problem meant Visser missed the tour to Japan and spent the summer rehabilitating and making sure he was fit for Quins’ latest assault on the Premiership title.

But the 29-year-old admits it may take him a little longer than most to hit peak form as he looks ahead to the visit of champions Sarries to The Stoop next weekend.

The strapping 6ft 5in, 17st back, injured in Quins’ European Challenge Cup final loss to Montpellier in May, claims: “I’m a big old heavy sprinter and it takes me a bit more time than most to get to 100 percent. It’s one thing getting back on the field but I have to get my speed up again as well as my sharpness.

“It looks as if I won’t make the autumn internationals but I am determined to play myself back into that Scotland squad for the Six Nations and beyond. I can only do that by firstly getting my fitness right and then performing my best for Quins.

“We’ve had a bit of a sticky start. We beat Bristol but then weren’t at our best at Sale and we paid for poor discipline with some yellow cards and a red one.

“We need to show we can be genuine title contenders again. This club needs to be playing in the top European competition.”

On Sarries’ visit to Quins next Saturday, Visser insists it is wrong for people to start getting too carried away claiming the Premiership title could be a foregone conclusion.

He insisted: “People always make predictions this early in the season about this team or that but it’s a long hard campaign so I don’t buy into anyone saying it already looks like a one-horse race and that Saracens look too strong for the other clubs.

“You have to throw the internationals into the equation when they’ll be missing key players in the autumn and Six Nations. We will also but that’s the time when things can change.”
