Blues can handle the pressure says Wilson

- ■ By MATT LLOYD

DANNY Wilson reckons Cardiff Blues can handle the pressure after stretching their unbeaten start to the season.

Blues ended their ten game run without a win against Glasgow with a thrilling victory at the Arms Park.

Gareth Anscombe’s boot and a try from Alex Cuthbert handed the Blues a dream-start.

Glasgow responded through Stuart Hogg and Peter Horne but Ray LeeLo’s try just before half-time proved crucial.

Ali Price grabbed a third for the Warriors but the Blues held out before Steven Shingler’s late penalty sealed a rousing third win in a row.

Head coach Wilson said: “It was a fantastic win and a real statement from us. It it’s still only three games into the season but we’re really happy where we are.

“Glasgow are a top side so it’s extremely pleasing to have beaten them and won at Munster.

“But it will count for nothing if we don’t win at Zebre next week and I’m desperate to prove something there.

“There will be more expectation on us now but we have to deal with that.”

Blues dominated the opening quarter and were then twice denied over the line. But Cuthbert burst onto Anscombe’s pass to sail over from close-range to open a 13point lead.

Cuthbert limped off with a groin injury and former champions Glasgow responded with two quick-fire tries.

Rory Clegg and Horne combined to hand British Lion full-back Hogg an easy score. A mix-up from a Blues scrum then ended with Horne barging his way over for a second.

Cardiff recovered to strike just before halftime after wonderful handling by Ellis Jenkins, Matthew Morgan and Josh Navidi provided LeeLo the score.

Blues’ 20-14 lead was cut to a single point when Warriors scrum-half Price bounced off tackles to score, only for Clegg to miss the conversion.

Cardiff’s defence held firm until replacement Shingler slotted a 78th minute penalty to seal a rousing win.

Glasgow head coach Gregor Townsend said: “We did well to get our game going and get back into lead after conceding early points but the try before half-time was disappointing.”
