Tyson treble delivers KO to brave Richmond

- ■ By NICK VERDIER

TYSON Lewis helped himself to a hat-trick as Doncaster’s speed and power out wide helped them to a nine-try romp over Richmond.

Richmond were full of endeavour as demonstrated all game by the outstanding Will Browne who chased every kick with true grit and determination – even if one of them cost him a yellow card for talking out Alex Shaw in the air.

Richmond led mid-way through the first half when Charlie Broughton touched down but they couldn’t match Doncaster’s physicality in the wider channels.

The Knights had the bonus-point wrapped up by the half-hour with Lewis scoring twice and creating one for Lloyd Hayes while Paul Jarvis also went over.

Jarvis and Hayes each got their second just before and after the break while Alex Shaw, Lewis’ third and a late one from Sean Scanlon completed a fine display which pleased boss Clive Griffiths.

“We made error after error in the first 20 minutes and we knew Richmond were going to be up for it but we stuck to our gun and it worked,” he said.

“We’ve got some good players out wide and want to play with intent.”

Richmond started well with Sean O’Hagan slotting a penalty but they conceded the first try of the game with Lewis breaking through and setting up Hayes for an easy run in.

The hosts showed great endeavour and they hit back two minutes later through Broughton from a five-metre scrum after Tom Sergeant was held up over the line.

O’Hagan failed to con-

vert but was on target with a penalty five minutes later and Richmond led 11-7.

But it didn’t last long as Jarvis edged the Knights in front before two tries from Lewis, the second from a blistering 60-metre run, secured the try bonuspoint.

Jarvis matched Lewis with his second on the last play of the half making it 31-11 and soon after the restart it was Hayes’ turn to get his second after Browne’s yellow card.

A fine line from Shaw got Doncaster their seventh of the afternoon and even if Cameron Mitchell got one back for Richmond, it was the visitors who had the last word with Lewis’ third and Scanlon going over on the last play.

Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill said: “You can give someone with the pedigree of Tyson Lewis any space. We have to take the lessons learnt into next week against Rotherham.”
