Barum are off the mark despite big loss

- ■ By ANDREW JONES

RYAN Carter’s late try gave Barnstaple their first point but the National Two new boys went down to a third heavy defeat.

Canterbury put the game to bed with three tries in a 15-minute spell in the second half and it was only in the last five minutes that Barnstaple scored twice to earn a four-try bonus point.

Barum controlled the opening ten minutes and split the Canterbury defence for Linford Brock to touch down.

But the visitors were given an immediate route into the game when the restart was fumbled and Max Cantwell scored on the left wing.

Martyn Beaumont missed the conversion but landed two penalties to nudge his side ahead before Sam Rogers dummied through for a try.

Three minutes into the second half, a short lineout routine gave hooker Tom Rogers a try to make it 23-7.

Matt Hague powered over from a Barnstaple lineout two minutes later, but that was cancelled out when Canterbury prop Sam Kenny drilled through.

Aiden Moss then created one try for Harry Sayers and scored another himself to put Canterbury 40-14 up.

Barnstaple roused themselves with Luke Berry reaching over to score and Carter charging down the left wing for the bonus point, but Canterbury had the last word with Beaumont knocking over a penalty.
