Nelson proud of Filton after St Paul’s win

- ■ By NICK VERDIER

SAUL Nelson praised his Filton side as they secured an impressive bonus point 27-7 win at St Paul’s on Wednesday.

Iwan Hughes crossed twice for the visitors, with Leiland Gordon and Ezra Caven also touching down for the comfortable win, Caolan Englefield was the only man to cross for St Paul’s.

“We weren’t very good in the first game, but since then we’ve been really good and that’s shown in the performances,” Nelson said. “We played with ambition and belief and executed our skills properly. At times we’ve tried too hard to get the magic offload, but keeping it simple has been shown to work.”

Exeter College continued their superb start to the campaign with a third successive bonus-point win, this time a 29-5 victory at home to Henley.

Finn Marks and forward James Kenny both crossed before the break, with Charlie Wright and Jack Sylvester adding scores in the second half.

But Hartpury College remain hot on their heels in the South group just a point behind, putting seven tries past Ivybridge in a 46-14 victory.

A late try from Ned Newman’s late try secured Beechen Cliff School a thrilling 27-22 victory over Truro.

Oaklands took advantage of Worcester Sixth Form’s non-game week to move top of the North Group with a nail-biting win over Wyggeston.

Tries from Cairo Sango and Joe Hall proved decisive for the Saracens-affiliated College as they finished 12-11 winners with the home side securing a well-earned losing bonus point.

Matt Sturgess scored four tries as Myerscough defeated Bishop Burton 50-24 in a highscoring clash.

A last gasp penalty from Jake Rodgers handed Gosforth Academy a 22-20 home win over Moulton.
