Quins put their fans on ‘text’ yob watch

- NEALE HARVEY

HARLEQUINS have launched a ground-breaking text initiative aimed at weeding out troublemakers.

The club’s zero tolerance approach follows complaints from supporters regarding “aggressive behaviour” aimed at match officials during last week’s Premiership clash with Northampton.

Harlequins’ crowds have doubled over the last decade and the club is determined to protect its family friendly reputation.

An emailed statement to fans said: “Following complaints regarding antagonistic and aggressive behaviour during the victory over Northampton, Harlequins is looking into complaints.

“We are proud of the atmosphere our supporters create and will not allow a minority, however small, to affect it. The club takes a zero tolerance view of abuse toward match officials, the use of foul language and any other behaviour that is inconsistent with the game’s values.

“Supporters observing offensive behaviour can report it to their nearest steward or use our new matchday text service.”

Harlequins’ stance follows the banning of an unspecified number of fans by Bristol following an outbreak of violence at their match against Exeter in September, while last April, referee Greg Garner and his assistants were abused by Bath fans at the Rec, one fan entering the dressing room.
