Lewis Jones and his amazing kicking
READING Brendan Gallagher’s article on Lewis Jones brought back memories from the early Fifties at Saracens in Bramley Road.
My brother Arthur Simmons (he played in the wartime internationals) was secretary of Devonport Services and bought his teams to Southgate to play Saracens. Lewis Jones played and took the kicks including one from the halfway line.
This was with a wet leather ball. It not only sailed through the posts but over the dead ball area, the grass behind before landing in the road beyond. Lewis had taken just a two step run-up. Extraordinary.
I never asked for any autographs but the teams my brother brought to Saracens from Devonport and United Services Portsmouth included many internationals on National Service.
I cannot remember the names but was once sat between two Welsh international props in my father’s Ford Popular. Not much room even for a 10-year-old! RICHARD SIMMONS via email
