Armstrong makes hay for fab Fylde

Fylde ................ 38 Hull Ionians .... 17

- By GALILEO SUTHERLAND

DESPITE fan favourite David ‘Fairy’ Fairbrother being away on navy duty, Fylde still managed to see off Hull Ionians at home.

They opened the try scoring via a Scott Armstrong solo try in the second minute with the winger streaking in from the 22. A Connor Wilkinson break followed by some fluid passing phases led to a try from Jack Turley minutes later. Greg Smith putting the home side up 14-0.

It was all Fylde in the opening quarter of the game, Hull barely had the ball. But they hit back against the run of play with Ali Thomson scoring off a lineout drive in the 11th minute.

Fylde scored again moments later with Armstrong scoring another superb breakaway try. Smith again converted to give Fylde a 21-5 lead. Hull had a break of their own from Zak Poole down the sideline. That led to a yellow card for Fylde’s Matt Lamprey and Hull full-back Greg Lound scored an unconverted try. At the end of the half Fylde secured the bonus point with Chris Briers linking up with Armstrong to go over.

The second half was a quieter affair, with Hull’s only score a penalty try in the 48th minute. After a Hull yellow card also yielded a penalty, Smith slotted it over for a 31-17 lead. Armstrong’s try in the 77th minute was icing on the cake.
